I agree that picture books are such powerful mentors for students whether creating with paper pencil or digitally. We need to create a google doc of picture books and digital creations inspired by them:)

Great post, Tony, and it reminds me to be judicious in what we use as Mentor Texts. One of the difficult balances I have had is in trying to show the possibilities with a mentor text, but then help students move beyond just emulating it (because they know I, the teacher, see it as a good piece of work). Maybe that is a topic for another post on another day, eh?

Katie and Kevin,
Thanks for the feedback.
1) Setting up a Google Doc might be an interesting plan. So thanks for volunteering Katie!
2) Kevin, I wrestle with watching students be inspired by mentors to nearly using them completely as a crutch frequently. I tend to be more hands off because of the age of my writers if the line between those ideas gets crossed, because I don't want to shut them down completely. I am glad you posted on the subject, it gave me lots to consider.
Tony
